When looking for a Boulder Contractor, first off ask friends and family for references. If you know someone who has had a house remodel, or work done, ask them about their experience and if they would recommend that person.
Then when you have a couple numbers, call and talk with them, find out about the contractor, have a conversation, if it seems like they might know what they're doing, tell them what you want to have done, and ask if that is something they can handle.
If it seems like a fit then meet and get a quote. On a large job, say anything above a $1000 you may want to get a couple bids. If you have trouble getting 2-3 phone numbers from your friends, you can look in craigslist under skilled trades(I have found great subcontractors and some not so great), on the bulletin board of your local coffee shop or grocery store(usually for handyman stuff only), google, or phone book.
When interviewing for a contractor, make sure they know what they’re doing, ask questions-like how long have you been in business? How many decks have you built/kitchens remodelled? Are they Licensed and Insured? Depending on the job, the person may or may not need to be licenced(handyman projects), but still should be insured.
Then, how do you feel around them, talking to them? Are they respectful? or do they use foul language? Do they seem to know what they’re talking about? Are they boastful? What’s your gut say? is it screaming get this guy outta here! or I really like this person?
You are inviting this person into your life for a short or long period of time, paying them money to help you create your dream(even a small handyman job is part of your dream of a better feeling home) so you want someone who you feel comfortable being around, talking to, even criticize, that you feel you can work with, who can also do the job and do it well.
